Recovering From Facial Surgery: What No One Tells You: a woman rests on a light-colored sofa, wrapped in a blanket, beside a curtained window in late-afternoon light.

At a glance: what is recovery from facial surgery really like?

The first few days bring swelling, bruising, stiffness and disrupted sleep, and your face may look worse before it looks better. Anxiety is common, and the mirror is misleading at this stage. After a facelift, many patients return to social activities at around two weeks, but swelling and scars keep changing for months.

  • First days: swelling and bruising are expected and look different from one day to the next.
  • Pain: acetaminophen and ketorolac, prescribed at discharge.
  • Sleep: on your back for 1 month.
  • Sensation: areas near the ears may feel numb.
  • Social life: many patients return at around 2 weeks; the vast majority by the third week.
  • Support: 24-hour WhatsApp support from Isanna and me.

The recovery timeline, with stitch removal, follow-up visits and when each activity is cleared, is on my facelift recovery page. Here I talk about what the timelines don’t show: what these days tend to feel like for the people going through them.

Your face may look worse before it looks better

In the first few days, your face is swollen, bruised and feels stiff, and one side may look different from the other. Many people are startled by the mirror. Don’t compare each morning with a photo taken later in recovery: at follow-up visits, I assess your progress and tell you what’s expected and what needs attention. The ASPS recommends asking your surgeon beforehand what to expect during recovery [1]; it helps to go into these days prepared.

Pain, sleep and fatigue

For pain, I prescribe acetaminophen and ketorolac at discharge; don’t add other medications on your own. Sleeping on your back for the first month changes how you sleep, and feeling tired in the first few days is expected. Rest doesn’t mean staying still: for everyday moving around, follow the instructions the team gives you.

Numbness and sensation

Areas near the ears may feel numb. At follow-up visits, tell me where you notice it and whether it has changed. Numbness is no reason to press, heat or massage the skin: when you can’t feel it properly, it’s easier to injure it.

Anxiety is part of it too

It’s common to check your face all day, look for symmetry and try to predict the result. When swelling peaks, you may even second-guess your decision. I’d rather you bring that worry to me than try to interpret every sign on your own. My article on realistic expectations in plastic surgery helps set expectations for each stage.

When social life comes back

In my practice, many patients feel comfortable returning to social activities at around two weeks, and the vast majority by the third week, still with some swelling. Makeup is allowed at 7 days. Going back to work depends on what you do: a task at home, with breaks, is different from lifting heavy loads or appearing on camera. If you’re coming from another city or from abroad, plan on 12 to 14 days in Londrina; my article on what international patients should know before a facelift in Brazil covers this.

When not to wait

Swelling that increases quickly on one side, severe pain, ongoing bleeding, fever or new weakness in the face means you should contact the team right away. Shortness of breath or chest pain needs emergency care immediately, and pain or swelling in one leg needs urgent assessment [2]. WhatsApp support is no substitute for the emergency room when a serious sign appears. The recovery instructions in my patient journey list the changes that shouldn’t wait for your next visit.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for one side of my face to be more swollen?

Some difference between the sides is common in the first few days. Swelling that increases quickly on one side, especially with severe pain, needs to be assessed right away.

When will I see the result?

Not in the first few weeks. Swelling and scars keep changing for months; I follow your progress with visits and photographs at 2, 6 and 12 months.

Will I need someone with me?

A companion isn’t required. If you’d like help, the team can recommend a driver and a caregiver, hired separately.

Talk it through before you pick a date

If you’re considering facial surgery, write to us on WhatsApp: Bruna, my AI assistant, handles the first contact and then puts you in touch with Isanna to arrange a consultation with me. At the consultation, we talk about how to fit recovery into your life.
